Guild Wars 2 - Fish Like a Pro in Seitung Province
Your fishing journey in Guild Wars 2 begins when you get to Cantha’s first map, Seitung Province, after completing the story “Old Friends”. You can reach a few nodes from the various points on the docks in the harbor. The first nodes you will have access to are Shore Fish nodes. Once you progress through the story and unlock skiff, you will then be able to reach the Offshore Fish nodes.
Getting Started
When you reach the Eastern Wilds region, you are directed to complete a Heart that has you working to impress the fishing hamlet’s fishermen. Competing in the nearby fishing tournament meta will help you complete the heart and compete against other players for the most points. Until you get your skiff, it is rather challenging to reach all the Rare Fish nodes that spawn for the tourney, but there are some, as well as regular Shore Fish nodes, that spawn near the coast and on the docks just south. Catching any fish of Fine or higher rarity will give you points in the derby. Though you won’t likely win if other players are competing who can reach the Rare Fish nodes, you will still receive meta rewards.
"The charm of fishing is in pursuing something elusive, thought attainable. It is a simple yet profound practice of hope.
In-game achievement quote
You will receive some starter supplies for your fishing journey, but trust me you will need many more. I have a bag dedicated to baits so I always have them on hand. You may choose a more just-in-time method, but there is typically only one vendor for each fishing zone. In the Eastern Wilds there are three, all within arm’s reach, but nowhere else on the map. They will sell the Shrimplings and Sardines some of the more rare fish in the area are attracted to as well as additional lures.
Fishing Power
Completing the heart gives you access to Fisherman Benyo, who sells a fishing scarf and “Tips on Fishing” in addition to the usual fishing supplies. “Tips on Fishing” grants a +50 to your fishing power for one hour and will carry across maps. This zone only requires a fishing power of 50-200, but the higher your power the more likely you are to catch the fishes of higher rarity. You will have 175 fishing power from the rod, lure, and bait alone. Tips on fishing will put you over that marker as will food. See my guide on Fishing Basics to learn more about fishing power and how to maximize it.
The Fish
There are 21 unique fish you need to catch to complete the achievement “Seitung Province Fisher.” Three for each rarity, 6 shore, 12 offshore, and 3 open water. Open water fish can be caught both in and out of a node. I tend to cast an additional time or two after depleting a node (typically 3 catches per node) to try to get these fish. This is also a Saltwater zone, so you will also catch global fish as well and complete some of the “Saltwater Fisher” achievement. Circling on the southern portion of the map is the most efficient way, as it contains the most nodes of both types and is closer to supplies if you need more.
It will take some time and many fishing trips to complete this achievement and be rewarded with 6 Ancient Ambergris you will need for your gen3 legendary weapon, or to sell and make some gold on the trading post. This will unlock “Avid Seitung Province Fisher,” which is a repeat of the collection you can do over and over for a fishing reward bag containing 3 Ancient Ambergris and 30 Flavorful Fish Fillets (Rare Quality Fillets). Completing these achievements get you closer to being the ultimate fisher and earning the title of “Cod Swimming Amongst Mear Minnows.”
